Please Mr. Postman

When we moved into the house there was already a mailbox at the road along with posts on either side of the drive and what appeared to be a sign post.  All plain, worn and grey.  When we had the unexpected but wonderful warm up in March we thought it was time to paint the mail box post as well as the other posts.  I suggested putting one of the big bird houses on top of the sign post for decoration. Well, it kind of took off from there……..

The end result was this.

Painting the mailbox itself was an accident. I got paint on it and instead of running back up to the house for a rag I decided to keep going knowing that a replacement mailbox was in the near future.

We finally picked up a nice big rural mailbox but of course it was all black which would not work with our colorful entrance. Spray paint here we come. At first I thought just plain orange would be nice, but after painting the whole thing orange I thought it may need some more color to match what was happening……lesson being, never let me loose with spray paint!

Last night we installed the new mailbox.  I wish I had a camera out there to catch the carriers expression when they pull up to it. It has already slowed down a few cars while we were installing it. *grin*

Oodles & Oodles of Noodles!

Mr. S. came home on Saturday with an idea for the trees. He was in a local store and saw a display of noodles. Not the pasta kind, the water toy kind. He told me that while looking at them he came up with an idea of stringing a rope through them, securing it with a washer on one end and an S hook on the other and hanging them from the trees. I was a bit uncertain but figured it was worth a shot and seeing as how he is so supportive of all of the crazy ideas that I come up with it was my turn. So Sunday we headed back to town and picked up 5 noodles of different colors and some purple rope. (purple rope is necessary when you’re doing a project like this… it color coordinates yanno)

After a few minutes and some rearranging of the bird feeders onto the bottom of the noodles these are our new tree earrings!

They move very softly in the wind and make us smile. The birds seem to enjoy them as well.  What do you think?

Cold Frame Fun

I have been going a bit nuts trying to figure out how I’m going to start all of the plants I want to start inside the house on top of the little desk in the spare room which happens to be in front of the window that gets the most sun.  Finally I gave up and admitted that it wasn’t going to happen.  That’s when I started searching out  inexpensive greenhouse ideas.  Leave it to google to solve my problem quickly.  Very early on in the search I ran across this great link. How to Build an Inexpensive Cold Frame in Under 30 minutes with no Tools!  Well that title has my name all over it!

Straw bales!!!!

http://www.appalachianfeet.com

So I call the local store where I have purchased straw before and they inform me that there is a straw shortage in the area. They haven’t had any all winter.  So I explain what I’m attempting to do and ask if they think hay will work as well.  Sure!!

Not being totally convinced I throw the question out on my Facebook page and some of my friends replied with justifiable concerns. So Mr. S makes a call for me to a guy he knows who has horses and L tells Mr. S. that there’s someone who sells straw at such and such cross roads. “look for the sign”.  Ummmm…… after an 1/8 of a tank of gas and a nice leisurely drive to no where there is no sign and i’m discouraged, but will settle for hay if all I can get is hay. So back to the original store I go.  When I got there I talked with the owner this time and told her what I was hoping to do. She gave me the phone number of a person who she had just talked to today that said they had a few bales of straw left!  I called, we met, I have straw!  Ends up he was one block west of where L said we would find the original location. *sigh*

Back home I go with my wonderful golden straw to “build” our cold frame.  I set up all the bales and located the PERFECT window from the barn and tada!!

Mr. S hooked up the hose for me and I filled a bunch of pots and trays with mix and then watered them down and covered them back up until morning. Tomorrow when I get up at the crack of dawn for no apparent reason i’ll have something to do!!

I used plastic knives to make my plant markers so that I can try to keep track of what is what until we get it into it’s final spot in a few weeks.  I’m very excited!  Tomorrow after work i’ll transfer the tray of chives out to the cold frame also and free up some of the space on the desk in the spare room.

Friday’s Favorite Finds

TGIF everyone!  The first Friday of April!  Spring is in the air and our project list is extensive. Today i’m in the mood for some fun so i’m hunting up a project that will make me smile.

Here at Suttons Daze we have a lot, no really A LOT of frogs. We discovered this with the magical March warm up that we experienced. The property was a cacophony of frog song. I love it!  It makes me smile.  We are blessed with three different ponds. One natural, one man made and one little pond that is a water feature in the yard in need of much repair. In the little pond we discovered Jimmy, that is what Mr. S. named him. He’s a stunning little guy who doesn’t mind us watching him because he seems to enjoy watching us back. Along with Jimmy is a baby frog small as a dime and my first ever, seen in person tadpole.

Does this mean we have toads?  Who knows!  But I like to think there are a couple at least and that they would appreciate a fun toad house. Thus today’s favorite finds!  I want to make some toad houses for my neighbors.

The first is from about.com and appears to be easy enough. How to make a toad house. I think I can find some suitable cans or pots to do this.

Welcomewildlife.com provides instruction as well as additional information on how to attract toads, what to do if a pet bites a toad and more.

5 Orange Potatoes gives a great tutorial on making a decorative toad house. I really like this one.

I love this idea and will be making a toad house, maybe even a toad village to share with you soon.

April Goals for Week 1

I learned something last month. Do not make goals for the month! At least it doesn’t work for me.  I need smaller lists that are more attainable and can show progress faster. I am a list maker and have been ever since I can remember. I made lists to clean my childhood room, I made lists to clean my house, I made lists to be productive at work…… it’s a method that works well for me and offers timely rewards (crossing items off the list), if done properly. Monthly…. is too long of a time span to keep the motivation going. So this month I am breaking it down to weeks.

As I sat drinking my coffee this morning it occurred to me that 1/4 of 2012 is now behind us. Never to be revisited again.  As is the norm, the first quarter focused on staying warm, making plans and snuggling into the house to stay warm. Unfortunately this does not equate with productivity.  As a result, my goal is to be productive and accomplish some of the tasks needing attention around Suttons Daze as well as focusing on some creative endeavors.

With that said, this is my list of goals for the first week of April.

  1. Make 3 small rugs
  2. Hang the last of the bird houses
  3. List 3 rugs on Etsy
  4. Walk 3 times
  5. Make a toad house
  6. Cut up all black t-shirts
  7. Finish touching up the master bath paint
  8. Do Reiki homework
I think 8 is a good number to work with for this week.  Wish me luck!  What are your goals for this week?

Friday’s Favorite Finds

TGIF! Friday is here and the weekend is right around the corner. Today I am searching out pillow cover ideas in order to knock off one item from my To Do List. These are some of the ideas for DIY pillow covers that I liked.

Censationalgirl.com has this great DIY no sew project for pillow covers.

Last today are the Two Seam Envelope Pillow Covers by Teal & Lime.

Sparkle Power provides a great tutorial on a Super Easy Removable Pillow Cover  that looks attainable and easy enough to change up the covers as often as the mood hits.

After digging through our drawers and peeking into the scrap piles I have some old shirts that are now slated for pillow material. Keep an eye out for the project coming soon! In the mean time, please visit my DIY Pillow Covers Pinterest Board for even more pillow cover ideas.

March To Do List Update

I am happy to announce that I have a few items crossed off my list for March.

Bird Houses are painted and ready to receive renters!  I put my big ole clod hopper boots on and stepped into the swampy area to place this bright beauty on the tree stump. It’s not secured down yet, but it is level enough to hold it barring 65mph winds.

This mismatched trio will need to wait for their permanent location until Mr. S is available to put them on the trees for me.

After reviewing the list I think I may have over estimated my time and energy again, but i’m going to give it a solid attempt for the next 9 days *grin*

Monday Menu Planning

Happy Monday!  It’s a busy week according to my planner so I’m going to be creating some simple, healthy meals that will work great as left over lunches also.

Tonight we’re back in the salad mode with this yummy sounding salad shared by The Joy of Clean Eating.  Chopped Salad with Creamy Vinaigrette Dressing.

Tuesday we’re going to try Crock Pot Santa Fe Chicken. thanks to Chef in Training

Wednesday it’s Meatloaf day!  I’ve been craving some good old fashioned meatloaf and thanks to Martha Stewart I have a classic recipe to try. Classic Meat Loaf

Thursday as much as I’d love to throw some peanut butter between two slices of bread and have the night off i’m committed to cooking 5 meals a week so rolling the Pinterest dice we’re going to attempt Roasted Tomatoes with Shrimp & Feta via the fine folks at Real Simple. We’re going to leave out the Feta because Mr. S. doesn’t much care for it and I shouldn’t eat it anyway.

Anticipating a successful work week conclusion I’m in the mood to celebrate again! How does Roasted Lemon Garlic Herb Shrimp sound?  Wonderful of course!  Two of our favorite foodie items together. Shrimp and Garlic! Mmmm Mmm it has my mouth watering in anticipation of Friday’s feast.

What’s for dinner at your place?
