Vintage 1937 Radio Cabinet Make Over

1937 unemployment continued to drop to 14.3% dropping some 6.7% from the previous year. (Sound familiar?)
And the Engineering feat of the Golden Gate bridge opening gave Americans great pride, and the Millionaire Inventor / Industrialist set a new air record by completing the flight from Los Angeles to New York in 7 hours 28 seconds.
One of the unsolved mysteries of modern times the disappearance of Amelia Earhart also occurred in this year. *source*

And in 1937 Philco produced this great radio!

Well, it did look a lot better when it was new. But we thought it looked quite the treasure when we ran across it a couple years ago. So much so that we even moved it to the new house with us while we waited for inspiration and time to present itself.

I’m not sure which hit first, the inspiration or the time but it finally came out of the pole barn and into the house in preparation.  Mr. S. did a superb job cleaning it up for me. Decades of grime removed along with the knobs, non-working speaker and the insert in front of the speaker. (I’m certain there is a word for it, but you know what I mean right?)

Then it was time to go through the paint stash to see what I had to work with. There were a few conditions.

  1. It could not be red
  2. It had to be completed without purchasing anything
  3. It had to fit with the color scheme in the living room

Blue! This beautiful dark rich blue was waiting for me and this project. Patiently sitting on the shelf among vibrant pinks and oranges, soft yellows and browns so rich they make your heart melt.  Blue it is!

First coat on and it captured my attention and began guiding me as these projects always do.

In its time, it was a window to the world

Oops, modge podge wasn’t dry yet *grin* Don’tcha just love sheet music?

Some pieces just require names and this project found its name as I shuffled through the old sheet music pile looking for the right pages.  The titles of the music are important when matching the sheet music to the project and in this case it was instrumental *grin*.

She is now named Rhapsody in Blue

And that is the title of the sheet music on her sides.

This project is done for now. One day I might decide to add shelves to the inside, but for now we’re just going to use it as a stand for our dvd player, WII and such for the tv.

I love it!  A project off the list after two years *grin*
